About Ms. Antunes
Greetings Design Families!
My name is Shannen Antunes and this year I will be the MYP IB Design Teacher, as well as the Third Grade through Sixth Grade S.T.E.A.M. teacher.
This will be my 15th year teaching, and my third year as the Design teacher here at Norterra Canyon. This summer I attended over 120 hours of Coding and Robotics training. I believe that this will further learning opportunities for our students and look forward to implementing new and exciting technology this year!
If you are involved in a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) career, and are interested in sharing your expertise with our students, please feel free to reach out to me, and I will try to find the best opportunities for you in our class!
Also, if you're interested in donating items to our class, please check out our class wishlist throughout the year.
Or, you can donate your recycled materials to our class. Please check your emails to find out what we might need going forward! (Recycled materials include: empty toilet paper/paper towel rolls, scrap material for sewing projects, empty egg cartons, cardboard boxes/flat sheets of cardboard, 2 liter bottles, PVC pipe, etc.)
Thank you for your support this year!
Welcome to Design
Welcome to MYP IB Design!
This year, 6th graders will explore real world problems, and come up with possible solutions that will have them thinking about designing a sustainable future. They will learn about the Design cycle and how to apply it when working on their projects. They will learn about the UN's Global Goals and where we are at solving them.
7th Graders will begin where we left off, after a refresher course in the design cycle, as well as the research that we did on our Unit, "Designing a living space". They will dive deeper into the UN Global Goals, and create new products and prototypes. It is certain to be an exciting year!
8th Grade, it is here! Our favorite project! The Cardboard Chair Unit! But wait, there's more! This year we will also be following along with "Future City's", a worldwide design competition, to design and prototype a FLOATING CITY! I'm very excited to see the student's dreams of how to attain a sustainable, floating city! This year we will not be competing, but I'm hoping that it may be an option for future students.
All students will also tackle critical thinking when they ask themselves, "Just because we can, does it mean we should?"
