Sports Overview 2024-2025
Newly updated as of July 15th, 2024
Welcome to the Norterra Canyon home page for athletics. As the 24-25 school year progresses, this page will be updated…and in most cases you’ll probably be able to go to individual pages for each sport.
This page is primarily a sports overview regarding information that is relevant to most sports, and focuses on any changes for the 24-25 sports year.
This year, we are once again in the DV sports division known as 1A, and we share this division with 6 other schools…Sunset Ridge, Union Park, Paseo Hills, Inspiration Mountain, Anthem, and Desert Mountain.
The order of the sports during the year is as follows...
Baseball and softball are our Fall sports (tryouts will be approx. the week of Aug. 12th), Winter sports will be boys/girls volleyball and cross country (tryouts will be approx. the week of Oct. 31st), and Spring sports will be boys/girls basketball and cheer (tryouts will be approx. the week of Jan. 30th)
Our coaching lineup...
We're having some notable changes to our coaching staff, and many of them are still in process.
It can be confirmed that softball will now be helmed by Dale LeBlanc, Cheer will be coached by Stacy Mahoney, Cross Country will be led by Jill Barron, and Girls Basketball will once again be orchestrated by Tony Cosmano.
All other sports will have a coach identified well in advance of the start of their season, and that information will be pushed out (and posted on this page) as soon as possible.
Practices and tryouts :
With every sport, students need to have a current physical on file in order to tryout.
- Practices are typically every Mon – Thur from 3:10 to 4:45 (except for game days of course).
- All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are eligible for all 8 sports...but roster spots are reserved for 7th and 8th graders initially. NC allows for the potential use of 6th graders if and when a full and effective team cannot be fielded using only 7th and 8th graders.
- Tryout dates will always be pushed out in various formats, and are typically Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:10 to roughly 4:45. Athletes are required to have a current (less than 1 calendar year old) physical in order to attend tryouts.
- All 5th graders are eligible for the no-cut sport of cross country, and some 5th grade girls may be eligible to try out for cheer. Potential 5th grade cheer participants are allowed by the district to participate in practices and regular season basketball games, but are not allowed to participate in district cheer championships.
- Games (home and away) will usually start around 4:00.
- All away games will be parent drop-off…since bus transportation to most after-school activities has become very hard to schedule.
- Your athlete can bring an individual post-school snack, but the cafeteria may be planning on providing post-school snacks for athletes. There are also often parents of players who will offer to provide snacks for certain individual sporting events.
- Most schools (including Norterra Canyon) will charge a small $4 fee to attend their indoor sports, like volleyball and basketball.
- Grades are checked weekly by the Athletic Office to ensure academic eligibility.
- Student-Athletes who do not meet eligibility requirements by the end of the week (Friday @ 3pm) are disqualified from all inter-school competition for the following week.
- Parents are encouraged to track their child’s academic progress.
- If a physical and/or athletic fee is still missing once the season officially starts, the student will have to forego game participation.
- Coaches have 24 hours to process the results of a game and then initiate communication with their players (DVUSD policy)
- Please consider how you interact with a coach outside of the campus footprint (common courtesy).

Hello, everyone !!!
I am so excited to introduce the return of cross country competition.
Participation
Cross country is the only sport open to all 4 of the upper grades (5th - 8th), and we typically have around 35 team members. It is a 'no-cut' sport, which means that any student who can attend the majority of our practices is considered on the team and eligible to participate in meets.
Eligibility and Clearance
The 2 primary components to making sure your runner is eligible and cleared to run are making sure Norterra Canyon is provided with a current physical (within the last calendar year) and making sure your runner maintains acceptable scores in academics and citizenship.
Some more details
The sports are for NC students only of course, and will also be available to any potential DVOA students who are within the NC geographical boundary.
And as always…if you have any questions about sports in general, please come see or email Mr. Harder.
We will tentatively plan on having practices Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
- As with most sports, there is a $60 athletic fee, but that will not be assessed immediately, since I am willing to give students a week or two of practices to determine whether the sport is for them or not.
- As usual (since the cross country team’s size of roughly 33 runners makes it very unlikely that every runner will be available to do every meet), runners only have to run in a minimum of 2 of the 4 meets in order to qualify for the end of season championships.
- Meets will typically start around 4:15, and will almost see the 5th & 6th graders running first.
- 5th & 6th graders run 1.5 miles in meets, and 7th & 8th graders run 2 miles in meets.
- On days where runners may be absent from school, attending practices and meets is still an option.
-
*** With cross country being in the winter this year, buses would have created situations where runners arrive too late...since meets have to start ASAP and end ASAP due to the early darkness in December and January. As a result, of course, the meets will be parent drop-off and pick-up.
Volleyball 2024-2025
Volleyball Schedule
- Games will usually start around 4:30 (depending on the arrival of the referees)
- Let’s plan on individual post-school snacks for now
- Most schools will charge a small admission to athletic competitions.
- Grades are checked weekly by Athletic Office
- Student-Athletes who do not meet eligibility requirements by the end of the week (Friday @ 3pm) are disqualified from all inter-school competition for the following week.
- Parents are encouraged to track their child’s academic progress.
- If a physical and/or athletic fee is still missing once the season officially starts, the student will have to forego game participation.

Basketball 2025
Basketball Schedule
Welcome to the Norterra Canyon baseball page.
As the 24-25 school year progresses, this page will be updated as needed. The regular season schedule is posted below.
This year, baseball is once again in the DV sports division known as 1A, and we share this division with 6 other schools…Sunset Ridge, Union Park, Paseo Hills, Inspiration Mountain, Anthem, and Desert Mountain.
Our coach
I am so excited to announce our new coach, Cade Hall. Cade is thrilled to take the helm, is a former stand-out baseball player for NC, and is the son of one of our previous baseball coaches...Craig Hall. We're excited to see all the energy he plans on bringing to our program.
Tryouts, practices, and games :
-
For baseball, any 6-8th grade boy is invited to attend tryouts this coming Monday and Tuesday (the 12th & 13th) from 6:45 am - 7:55 am, as well as after school on Wed the 13th from 3:10 - 4:55.
-
All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are eligible to try out, but roster spots are reserved for 7th and 8th graders initially. NC allows for the potential use of 6th graders if and when a full and effective team cannot be fielded using only 7th and 8th graders.
- Athletes should wear durable but light athletic gear for baseball tryouts, and should avoid spending a lot of money on cleets and gloves until they can be sure they are on the team.
- If an athlete does not have a glove to use for tryouts, AD Harder can arrange one for them.
- Games (home and away) will usually start around 4:00.
- A specific game schedule will be added soon, but know that while the first 2 games are currently scheduled for Tues, Sep 3rd and Thur, Sep 5th, most games from there out will be on Mondays and Wednesdays.
